Trouble archiving links from Bloomberg[edit]

Wanted to cite a recent Bloomberg article for use in Japanese yen, but getting nowhere with any of the archive sites. Neither Wayback Machine, Archive Today, nor Megalodon are working for me. Am I doing something wrong or are Bloomberg articles no longer able to be archived? Thanks for your help! —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 22:41, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Difference between having Notability and having Reliable Source[edit]

Hello, I have been reading different Wikipedia policies for a while now, and it occurred to me that there might be a difference between a subject being notable and it having reliable sources. Is it the right understanding? if so, could we say about an influencer or any other subject, is notable, however, the lack reliable sources? The reason I am asking these questions, is there are many pages on Wikipedia, which have almost zero references, still they are in live space.

If the above understanding is correct, what should be done with such page?

Thank you. MsAzra (talk) 00:56, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Notability means that a subject has multiple reliable sources that are secondary (not associated with the subject) and provide significant coverage. See Wikipedia:GNG
Reliable sources means that the sources are considered to be reliable and trustworthy.
In your case, your subject has no reliable sources that are secondary and provide significant coverage, which means that it is not notable.
Just because you can't easily find sources doesn't mean that your topic is not notable. For example, for my article Metallic Child, the subject is barely notable but only because I managed to find three reliable sources deep in the internet. If you search for longer, you might find reliable sources to meet notability requirements. EternalNub (talk) 01:03, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There are many articles, especially older and about obscure topics, that exist, but do not meet current standards per referencing. A choice then is nominate for deletion or add references. David notMD (talk) 02:24, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@David notMD O I see. Thanks a lot, it does clarify the reason for the articles' existence. Thank you. MsAzra (talk) 00:49, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@EternalNub Thanks a lot for your reply. I understand now. :) Thanks. MsAzra (talk) 00:48, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Citing on Mobile[edit]

Howdy howdy! I wanted to ask if you could cite sources on the mobile version of Wikipedia because it seems like you can't for some reason? Thanks. Monurin (talk) 11:20, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Monurin, and welcome. You certainly can, but it may well be that certain tools that make it easier are not available.
I don't do much editing on mobile, myself, but Cullen328 does, and I suggest you read his essay User:Cullen328/Smartphone editing. ColinFine (talk) 16:56, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply! I've read through the article but his way of referencing is a tad too complex for me since it seems to involve manipulating the source code? Which is just a bunch of mumbo jumbo to me. Guess I'll have to stick with the web version for now. Cheers. Monurin (talk) 05:43, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Bare reference notices with dead links[edit]

Hello,

I do backlog cleaning, and there are many articles that are tagged with using bare references, but all of the bare references are are dead links with no archived copy. What I have done in the past is mark the link as dead, and removed the bare reference notice. Is this the correct practice?

Thanks! EatingCarBatteries (talk) 15:03, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the Teahouse, EatingCarBatteries. Many people assume a link is dead when it may in fact have simply had its url changed by the website owner. So long as you are aware of this and attempt to 'Google' the relevant keywords that are likely to be found in the cited article's title (based upon the factual statement being referenced), then this seems an appropriate way to go. But I do see many people who assume a source cannot be found when, in fact, with a bit of effort and technical ability, a new source can be located for some of them. More info at Wikipedia:Link rot and Wikipedia:DEADREF. Hope this helps. Others here may have a different approach to suggest, of course! Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 18:27, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Nick Moyes. It is far better to search for and add a reliable source than to remove plausible content just because a URL is dead. Cullen328 (talk) 20:27, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@EatingCarBatteries, just in case you weren't aware, since it looks to me like you're working on this task manually, there are some extensions that make finding archives much easier, such as this Chrome extension. There's also IABot and citation bot. -- asilvering (talk) 19:57, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to proof not paid?[edit]

Dear reader,

There is an article where I helped to build the page for my wife (backed by over 100 sources), I accidentally had ticked a box that I was paid, which I am not. I asked within talk if I could sent the person proof of not being paid and never got an answer. Now half a year later someone puts this disclaimer again above the article, ignoring that I can proof it within talk. Also my wife has been victim of activist groups that have tried to intimidate her for doing research on Indonesia, on such a level that the National History Association in the Netherlands issued a statement against them. It can very well be that the anonymous people who place the “UPE”tags are from this groups. As one of the persons on the talk page on the Dutch Wikipedia site of Anne-Lot Hoek also worked on the pages related to those activist groups. Who can help to get this tag removed (again)? Ewout12345 (talk) 20:04, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ewout12345: Based on your comment, I have changed the UPE tag to a COI tag, because you clearly have a conflict of interest regarding your wife Anne-Lot Hoek. That tag should remain until an independent editor reviews the article thoroughly. This is something you should have created in draft space and submitted for review, and then refrained from making any substantive changes after it was published in article space. As long as you keep making substantive changes to the article, the COI tag is relevant. ~Anachronist (talk) 20:13, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Anachronist: Please read the documentation of {{COI}}. In particular "In order to be tagged, the article should have a specific, articulatable, fixable problem. Do not apply this tag simply because you suspect COI editing, or because there is or was a COI editor. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:53, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am well aware of that, and that is why I tagged it accordingly. The most recent edit by the COI editor, for example, was an unsourced assertion about a living person. That suggests other similar problems exist but I haven't had the time today to examine the article closely. ~Anachronist (talk) 22:07, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Then you should also be aware that it also says: if you place this tag, you should promptly start a discussion on the article's talk page to explain what is non-neutral about the article. If you do not start a discussion, any editor will be justified in removing the tag without warning. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:18, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Need help fixing this[edit]

Hi! I made this edit [1] to an IP's talk page with the pencil edit button and found that this put the message in the wrong place. I cannot fix the message because I cannot see it on the TP and I do not have an undo button on mobile. Any help with fixing this is greatly appreciated. QwertyForest (talk) 20:26, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You used the wrong heading level and you put the comment at the top of the page, not at the bottom where the most recent comments should go. I have fixed these. ~Anachronist (talk) 20:34, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, and I appreciate the help. Not being able to undo on mobile is quite annoying though. Do you know why it's not possible? QwertyForest (talk) 20:39, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Although it is fiddly, I use the desktop version on my I-Phone - which enables undo, and other features. - Arjayay (talk) 20:47, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect template in sandbox[edit]

This is probably a silly question, but having created an article in my sandbox and moved it to mainspace, I now have a redirect template in my sandbox. Is it okay for me to delete this, or would that affect the article, please? ArthurTheGardener (talk) 20:44, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@ArthurTheGardener: It's fine to remove it. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:46, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. (Nice user name, by the way). ArthurTheGardener (talk) 20:51, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
ArthurTheGardener, you've linked each book to a page of a particular retailer. Please don't do that. (Interested readers can arrive at different language/nation flavours of this retailer via the ISBN link.) Also, please specify the publisher; and for the "location", be more specific than "US" if you can. -- Hoary (talk) 01:13, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, will do, thanks. Is there another site (not a retailer) that Wiki prefers to link to the ISBN number, please? (This is my first try at a creating a page, and I'm still finding my way.) ArthurTheGardener (talk) 09:09, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@ArthurTheGardener We prefer to use Google books, which is not a retailer and for many books allows search inside. If you use the WP:Citation expander gadget, then you can get it to automatically convert the ISBN to most of the necessary fields. I've done the first Jendia Gammon example for you so you'll see the output which in this case includes her as publisher. I had to add the page count and Google link manually, as is easily done once you find the Google books entry, again via the ISBN. Note that the Google URL link is automatically associated with the title, not the ISBN, which Wikipedia links to Special:BookSources. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:41, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I appreciate your help. ArthurTheGardener (talk) 13:47, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@ArthurTheGardener .... as an aside, I note that the portrait of Gammon which was uploaded by User:JDianneDotson clearly states in its exif data that it is "© Nicholas Barrett, All Rights Reserved", who was presumably the photographer. I hope that the uploader can now get him to email Commons to confirm that he releases the rights to the image, or it can't be used. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:49, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah yes, I see that now. My bad - I didn't check the provenance when I looked it up on Wikicommons. I'll see if I can find something more appropriate. ArthurTheGardener (talk) 13:51, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Page dismissed[edit]

I added more information to a stub for a class project. I left the original info and added before and after it and cited all proper resources. I went to publish and it dismissed it saying it was unconstructive so i sent in a report, but it is saying the title cannot be found or does not exist. What do I do? Amalley0627 (talk) 00:51, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Amalley0627, if you'd kindly gloss for us each "it" within it dismissed it saying it was unconstructive so i sent in a report, but it is saying the title cannot be found or does not exist, then we'd understand what you're talking about and very likely be able to advise you. -- Hoary (talk) 01:10, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I am very new to wikipedia and was not thinking.
When i hit publish. A notice popped up at the top from wikipedias automatic filter saying that the submission was dismissed due to being unconstructive. When i went to report it (because on the notice gives you the option to report if you believe it is wrong) i made my report and went to publish and when i did a notice popped up saying the title could not be found. 73.104.183.232 (talk) 01:25, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You've already raised the matter at Wikipedia:Edit filter/False positives/Reports#Amalley0627: the right place for it. An underinformed guess is that it looks very strange when an article that doesn't seem to have any relationship with furniture has a reference to a page on a website whose domain name suggests that it's hawking old furniture. But the website isn't obviously hawking old furniture and the web page is informative. (And in its previous state the Wikipedia article was very poor.) As I'm not well up on this particular aspect of Wikipedia's workings I don't propose to involve myself (because if I did so I might muck something up). Please be patient: I think that the matter will be sorted out satisfactorily and fairly quickly. -- Hoary (talk) 02:18, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict)

Amalley0627 Welcome to the Teahouse.
It sounds like you have run into an edit filter while trying to edit Sangmin. Since the edit did not get published, and you did not provide much by way of additional details when you made your false positive report, it would just be speculation to guess why you triggered the edit filter.
I know that discussion of castes is covered by one of the general sanctions regimes, but I've never seen any mention of Korean castes. Or perhaps it was one of the references you offered. It would probably be best at this point to add more details to your false positive report. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 02:29, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, on the source it does, but not the actual article. Blackmamba31248 (talk) 13:14, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Blackmamba31248: It shows up in the article when I look at it, but it's still showing up in the twelfth position like it was showing up before you made the edit. The reason it's doing that has to do with the paramaters you've used for that particular entry. You physically moved the entry to a higher position in the list, but the you didn't change the parameters for the entry and still used |s12= and |flag_s12=; so, the software reads that as add this entry to the twelfth line in the list. First, you need to change the parameter to reflect the new location you want the entry and it's flag to appear; then, you need to adjusts the parameters of each subsequent entry according to reflect the new ordering. -- Marchjuly (talk) 13:41, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for poining this out. I have fixed it now. Blackmamba31248 (talk) 14:58, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Translation[edit]

I have translated a wikipedia article and want to publish it. However, wikipedia says that publishing translation is limited to experienced users.

Here's the translated page (in English) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Public_Voice

And here's the original article (in Persian): https://fa.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D8%A2%D9%88%D8%A7%DB%8C_%D9%85%D8%B1%D8%AF%D9%85%DB%8C

Would you please help me add the English translation as another language to the original article?

Thank you! Hobabe.shisheh (talk) 04:03, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Hobabe.shisheh and welcome to the Teahouse!
While use of the translation tool is restricted, you can certainly produce a translated draft, as you have here, and see if you can get it accepted at WP:articles for creation. Some requirements need to be met. Use the {{translated page}} template on the talk page of the draft to pinpoint where the text is being translated from. And, despite being an article on a different language Wikipedia, the draft must still comply with English Wikipedia's policies before it can be accepted.
In this case, you need to supply more inline citations for the content (or remove the content you cannot find supporting sources for) and you need to keep a focus on how your subject meets notability guidelines, such as the ones at NBAND.
The other problem with your draft is that it is not really written in an encyclopedic, neutral style or tone. A sentence like Public Voice's escape from Iran was a long and arduous journey comes off as editorializing, which we are not supposed to do. If you can quote a person who holds that opinion, then - properly quoted and cited - it can appear in an article. There's a lot of other examples of this kind of writing in your draft that will likely prevent it from being accepted in its current state. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 04:46, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The purpose of a citation in a Wikipedia article is to provide verification for particular information in the article: nothing else.
If Republic Bharat appears to be a reliable source (see in particular WP:NEWSORGINDIA), and you are using it to support a claim in the draft, then you can certainly add the citation to the end of the sentence or paragraph with that claim in it. ColinFine (talk) 10:29, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What to do[edit]

How are you supposed to tell the difference between if something is promotional or not? Like this excerpt: "According to Star Tribune in 2015, the project resulted in a 70 percent increase in walking in the city, smoking decreasing by 4 percent, and participants in the program losing a combined 4 tons of weight. In 2022, while reflecting on the project, retiring project lead Ellen Kehr noted that smoking had further fallen from 23 percent at the start of the project to 16%. According to themselves, the Blue Zones project has spread to over 70 communities across North America and impacted approximately 4.35 million people." It seems promotional...but is it? TheBrowniess (talk) 11:26, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

According to themselves, the Blue Zones project: I'll take the referent of "themselves" to be "the Blue Zones project" (syntactically odd, but no alternative referent occurs to me). So now we have the project and its retiring lead -- and nobody else -- describing the project's success. I wouldn't call that "promotional", but certainly it's not satisfactory. -- Hoary (talk) 12:00, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is this artist's discography long enough to justify its own page?[edit]

I think that the discography section of K.Flay's article is quite long. Could be created into a separate discography article? Rockboy1009 (talk) 14:05, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Rockboy1009, deciding on whether something belongs on its own page is not only a question of length, but primarily one of WP:Notability, in the Wikipedia sense of that word, which isn't quite the same as the plain English sense. In a nutshell: are there multiple, reliable, independent, secondary sources that cover the discography, with significant coverage in them? I.e., not just a listing of them, but some serious analysis like you'd get when reading a book or chapter or serious web article on Billy Joel's albums, how they compare, the evolution, the styles, the influences, who sat in, recording information, an so on? See WP:PAGEDECIDE for more on this. There is also something called a List article which has a lower bar to creation, and if you call the new article List of K. Flay songs (or albums), then you could have just a list (or table), as long as the overall topic meets the Notability threshold for a list article. See Wikipedia:Stand-alone lists for more about this. Mathglot (talk) 23:45, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

New User question re: conflict of interest[edit]

Hello! I am a brand new User, just starting to find my way around and needing guidance. Yesterday I substantially improved upon and added to this stub: Boniface Luykx, which was created in 2015. I intend to expand it into a real article with specific citations in the near future. My question: I knew Boniface Luykx, who has been deceased for 20 years, and edited some of his works. I need to disclose this potential conflict of interest, but I am not sure how or where to do so. Many thanks. Sister2022 (talk) 16:35, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Sister2022, and welcome to the Teahouse. Thank you for being open about your COI. The best place to declare it is on your user page User:Sister2022. (You have not so far created this: that's all right, it's not required, and some editors choose never to create it. But it's a good place to make the declaration).
You can also declare it on the talk page Talk:Boniface Luykx.
As you'll see from WP:COI, you should not from now on edit the article directly, but should make edit requests on the article's talk page. ColinFine (talk) 17:00, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for this guidance! I will proceed as you have suggested. Sister2022 (talk) 19:35, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Appeal an AfD decision[edit]

I was involved in an AfD decision recently that I feel had emerging consensus around a Keep !vote but the closing admin chose instead to Merge. If anything, I think this was premature at least and that more !votes were coming in still in support of a keep of the page, and the merge view was in the minority and not soundly based on policy. How might I go about appealing this other than already posting on the closing admins talk page?

The AfD in question was very well supported by reliable sources that did absolutely distinguish between the term the page referred to and another similar term. Here is the link to the AfD that I would like to appeal merging of. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Woke Mind Virus. I am not familiar with the process of an appeal, if there is one, but I do not think this particular decision accurately reflects the consensus that appeared as a result of the AfD. Proper procedure for obscenities/slurs?[edit]

I'm wondering if there's any sort of proper procedure to censor quotes.

I recently read an article (WeatherStar) which contains a quote from an incident where a broadcast machine was tampered with. The quote contains a racial slur, and despite the MOS saying that quotes should always contain obscenities exactly as the quote was said, I can't help but think it's inappropriate to have the uncensored quote on a page where it really wouldn't be expected to see language like that. @MilesPrower1992: the MOS saying that quotes should always contain obscenities exactly as the quote was said - The MOS reflects consensus, as at the time it was written. If you wish to propose a change to the MOS, do so on WT:MOS. But first please read WP:NOTCENSORED, then check that the same change has not been proposed in recent months. (edit conflict) Hi MilesPrower1992. As you've pointed out, Wikipedia's doesn't really WP:CENSOR or otherwise WP:BOWDLERIZE quotes containing what might be perceived by some as offensive content. So, if the content is part of a reliably sourced quote and essential to the understandng of a the quote in an encyclopedic context, then it can be included in articles. You've already started a discussion about the latter at Talk:WeatherStar#RE: the racial slur incident; so, that's the best place to continue the discussion. My personal opinion is that you're probably going to need to come up with a stronger argument than I really didn't expect to have to explain why I showed my friend an article including the hard R (particularly since there exists a stand-alone Wikipedia article about the slur in question), but you can also seek additional input from relevant WikiProjects if you like as long as you do so in accordance with WP:APPNOTE. There are no WikiProject banners listed at the top of that article's talk page, but perhaps some of the ones listed at the top of Talk:The Weather Channel would also apply to this article. -- Marchjuly (talk) 20:29, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again MilesPrower1992. The relevant content looks to have been WP:BOLDly added in August 2022 with this edit. You could WP:PING the editor who added it to the article talk page discussion you started, or add a {{Please see}} template to their user talk page to see whether they want to comment on it. Whatever you decide to do, you should WP:AGF and not automatically assume the worst of the other editor. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:31, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The content in question has two references, neither of which uses the n-word. As pointed out by Gråbergs Gråa Sång, the New York Post is not a reliable source and so that reference should be removed. While it is correct that we do not modify direct quotes, it is also correct that a direct quote must be attributed to its source. Accordingly, I believe that the offensive quote should be paraphrased, and the specific slur should be omitted. Cullen328 (talk) 21:43, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Miles, you've gotten good advice above. One thing that wasn't quite clear to me, was whether your objection or question was related to your being offended personally, or more a general worry that someone might be offended. If the latter, there's not much to be done about that (other than what's already been explained). But if it's the former, I know that there are ways to avoid seeing certain kinds of images on Wikipedia articles that only affects your own view of Wikipedia, and it might be that there exists something similar for words as well, but I'm not quite sure. If not, there is something called a "user script" which can make specific alterations in your view of a Wikipedia page (and no one else's), and something like that might work for you. Mathglot (talk) 23:36, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
A bit of both, personally and for others. Of course, I understand that to avoid talking about slurs and other potentially offensive language would be unreasonable for a site like Wikipedia, and in cases like a page specifically about racial slurs or other topics where there's a reasonable expectation that there will be vulgar language and/or slurs, I'm not arguing.
It's just that, when I open a page about a piece of weather broadcasting hardware, I don't expect to see that kind of language. I understand that the rule is the rule, and I'll follow them. I was just shocked by seeing such a seemingly out-of-place quote on an otherwise SFW topic.
Thanks for the advice on the user script. MilesPrower1992 (talk) 01:07, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This reminds me of a discussion we had (I was User:Amatulic at the time) on Talk:Pinotage#Child Rape comment, in which we discussed a quotation by a famous winemaker comparing a cultivar of wine grape to "child rape". The consensus was, eventually, to remove it, and include it in the article about the winemaker instead.
A similar situation may exist here. If the quotation isn't relevant, or fits better in some other article, then it could be removed, but would need discussion first, as was the case with the Pinotage discussion I linked. ~Anachronist (talk) 07:34, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to add notes on wikipedia?[edit]

I keep seeing people with notes that are like

Saturn has rings (A) - (This would be a blue link) And then a would be a note. How do you add these? Thank you if you help in any way. 65.34.207.88 (talk) 21:12, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi IP 65.34.207.88. It sounds like you're asking about "explanatory notes" or "efn". If that's the case, you can find out some more information about efn at Help:Shortened footnotes#Explanatory notes. If that's not the case, then perhaps you can provide a link to an article where you're seeing these "notes" to make it easier for others to figure out what you're referring to. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:19, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Adding EFN for references[edit]

Hello everyone!

I recently have been editing my grandmothers article on Wikipedia. I had to stop obviously because I learned I had a COI. We had to remove her birth dates because they didn't have a reliable ref. Is using a EFN OK and saying something along the lines of

Birth date August 21, 1965 (EFN) No reliable source but confirmed by family. (EFN)

Her name is Catherine Emihovich

{I also could use help improving the article but I know you guys don't that here} Shane emihovich (talk) 21:51, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Shane No. Everything in an article, even extending to captions under images, must be WP:Verifiable in *published* sources. However, if your grandmother's birth certificate is available (many are online, at genealogical sites such as Ancestry.com), or even if not online but available in an in-person publicly searchable paper or electronic archive such as at a County Clerk's office, then you can probably add it. See Template:Cite archive. Mathglot (talk) 23:20, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Removing "May not meet notability" tag[edit]

Dan Haigh

Just to get it out of the way: I am not this individual nor do I know him, I found him through his level design work and found out about his musical work from this article.

The page is poorly sourced but given that:

1.) this individual was in two bands who have undisputed Wikipedia articles,

2.) other members in both bands have undisputed Wikipedia articles,

3.) this individual founded a software company making quake mods that were distributed physically by PC Gamer magazine (this company alone is probably notable)

4.) this individual composed the theme music to an official Valve title

5.) this individual created levels for another official Valve title, as well as having worked for multiple other game studios including some that the article does not mention

6.) this individual created music videos for Tesseract

I think removing the "may not meet notability" tag from 2015 should be uncontroversial. The article itself needs a lot of work, but I don't think the notability is in dispute at all. I'm not an experienced editor and I'd like a second opinion on this, because its hard to tell if the notability guidelines are met, but my intuition says the game work alone is notable. I do think the article lacks third party sources (partially because Valve did not credit its employees on Day of Defeat: Source for some reason), but I don't know if that needs to be fixed before the tag is removed. Cyrusabyrd (talk) 23:58, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please follow the link in the box you want to remove to our notability guidelines for musicians which will explain what determines notability, as opposed to the things you've listed which do not. Remsense 00:01, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
1.) this individual was in two bands who have undisputed Wikipedia articles,
2.) other members in both bands have undisputed Wikipedia articles,
Is an ensemble that contains two or more independently notable musicians, or is a musician who has been a reasonably prominent member of two or more independently notable ensembles.
4.) this individual composed the theme music to an official Valve title
Has performed music for a work of media that is notable, such as a theme for a network television show, performance in a television show or notable film, inclusion on a notable compilation album.
The other reasons I listed are not related to music, but I derived these music related ones from the page in the box I'm trying to remove. Let me know if I'm interpreting these wrong. Cyrusabyrd (talk) 00:17, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
1 and 2 are clearly irrelevant, per Members of notable bands are redirected to the band's article, not given individual articles, unless they have demonstrated individual notability.
4 is insufficient by itself, given there's little coverage of the subject in reliable sources. Remsense 00:46, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That page is saying an individual may be notable if they are a member of two or more independently notable ensembles. The part you're citing is pointing out that if the individual is only a member of a single notable band, and are not independently notable, they are incorporated into the article for the notable band. The exception "unless they have demonstrated individual notability" refers back to the notability guidelines, which include being a member of two or more notable ensembles. Cyrusabyrd (talk) 01:01, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The key word being may. It's irrelevant if there is not significant coverage of the person in reliable sources, which underlies our general notability guideline, of which the music page is a supplement. Remsense 01:04, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If the page needs to be better sourced before it meets notability that makes sense. The individual himself is covered in plenty of third party sources related to music and games, I'll try to work more of that in.
The Day of Defeat: Source thing needs to be cleared up anyway because the Wikipedia article for the game itself used to say Mike Morasky and was changed without any reasoning(I think adding Mike in the first place was an assumption based on his Team Fortress 2 work anyway.). I think its likely both people worked on different parts of the game's composition but without official credits its hard to nail anything down without relying on the claim from Haigh's website. Cyrusabyrd (talk) 02:23, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Hello @Cyrusabyrd, and welcome to Wikipedia! I would strongly suggest against it, as it appears to fail some criteria on Wikipedia's notability guideline for music. But I'm happy with waiting for another opinion. thetechie@enwiki: ~/talk/ $ 00:01, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cyrusabyrd: In my view, he clearly meets WP:MUSICBIO criterion #6. There are enough sources cited too. I would remove the tag. ~Anachronist (talk) 07:20, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For reference, this appears to be the revision where the tag was added: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dan_Haigh&oldid=658633387 Cyrusabyrd (talk) 23:17, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would recommend getting removing all the unreliable sources cited in the article, as well as the claims that cannot be found in another reliable source, they include IMDB, YouTube, and every other user-generated source like MobyGames. Without those, it seems there is very little that is properly cited in the article, hence the notability concerns. After cleaning and double-checking, it would be much more clear whether the subject is notable. It is also generally unacceptable to rely on primary sources like the subject's own website, which is also cited. See this list for sources whose reliability has previously been discussed by editors for reference. Remsense 23:29, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Mentioning someone whose name has changed[edit]

What is the best or correct way to mention that someone's surname has changed in the body of an article? Here is the sentence I'm looking at, as it stands now: "Yoda was originally portrayed by a puppet created by Stuart Freeborn and Wendy Froud (née Midener)." Is this the best way to do it? Froud was credited as "Wendy Midener" in the credits of at least one of the Star Wars films. Wafflewombat (talk) 00:57, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Wafflewombat: Her article already mentions her previous name, so I don't think it's needed in your example. RudolfRed (talk) 02:35, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Re-using citation[edit]

I'm working on the Yoda page and I want to re-use a citation that is in the infobox. It's right after the words "Jedi Order". I'm using the visual editor, and when I click "Re-use" in the citation creator, the citation I want doesn't show up. Can someone tell me how to re-use that citation? Wafflewombat (talk) 04:35, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I named that ref, so if you want to reuse that ref (though I'm not sure if it's the way to do it in the visual editor, I usually do stuff with the source editor), you would type <ref name="starwars-databank1" />. LilianaUwU (talk / contributions) 04:44, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ohfallingstar has been undoing this sentence on the page "Leslie Cheung", for its "disrespectful""gossip" though China News Service is a reliable source (see first undo, second undo' and third). As a conjecture on the cause of Leslie Cheung's death, I think it should stay on the page. What do you every wikipedians think?

AirSeven[edit]

Hi, i am currently trying to make an article on the airline AirSeven, i made the article, submited it, and it ended up declined. IDK what is wrong, it says that there is too little references, but the Danish version has less references so why can the translation i made with info not get aproved? Here is the draft link: Draft:Air Seven BluePlanespotter (talk) 12:59, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@BluePlanespotter The short answer is that different-language Wikipedias each have their own standards for inclusion. Here in the English version we are long past the need for brief articles that merely demonstrate something exits. Instead, we want material showing how the topic is wikinotable as defined for companies. That means that citations to company websites are OK for simple facts but won't demonstrate the required notability. We need about three sources which satisfy these criteria. It may be possible to improve your declined draft to the required standard. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:09, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks for the info BluePlanespotter (talk) 13:21, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
BluePlanespotter Hello and welcome. Please understand that each version of Wikipedia is a separate project with their own editors and policies. What is acceptable on one version is not necessarily acceptable on another. When doing a translation you must check the guidelines for the version you intend to write for to see if the topic meets those guidelines, like notability The English Wikipedia tends to be stricter than others. 331dot (talk) 13:10, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A suggestion would be to write in paragraphs, not a new line for every single statement. Please see WP:MOS. I will also note that Simple Flying is regarded as a generally unreliable source, see WP:SIMPLEFLYING.
As a reviewer, I would not accept in its current state. Qcne (talk) 15:59, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

AirSeven (Again again)[edit]

So i have added some more info and citations, and i just want to see if it's up to Wikipedia standards (If it's not then you are free to make some changes). Link: Draft:AirSeven BluePlanespotter (talk) 08:33, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, BluePlanespotter. In general Teahouse hosts are not reviewers, and, while we may sometimes look at a draft, reviewing is not a task we have chosen to take on. The best way to get a review is to submit it for review!
That may take months (or it may take minutes), but you can continue to improve the draft while you're waiting. In any case, if it is not accepted you'll get feedback about what is lacking.
As long as you are taking note of the comments and doing your best to improve it, nobody will be harsh on you for resubmitting several times. ColinFine (talk) 16:15, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks @Andrybak! Infobox mapframe seems to work well, however do you know if there's a way to align the map on the left/right and to add a caption? WikiFouf (talk) 00:44, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
WikiFouf, as the name suggests, template {{Infobox mapframe}} is intended to be used in infoboxes. Therefore, for simple alignment to the right, it can be put inside the template {{infobox}}, or inside {{infobox event}}, or {{infobox building}}, as in the earlier example:
{{infobox
|image1={{Infobox mapframe|id=Q100}}
|caption1=Example caption
}}
For standalone display, template {{Image frame}} can be used:
{{Image frame
|align=left
|content={{Infobox mapframe|id=Q100}}
|caption=Example caption on the left
}}
{{Image frame
|align=right
|content={{Infobox mapframe|id=Q100}}
|caption=Example caption on the right
}}
Hope this helps. —andrybak (talk) 00:59, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Watch list showing everything[edit]

Has anyone else had the problem where all the watchlist settings (All, pages, talk, and other) all show all the same info?

Mine has started doing this several days ago. Thus, info on my watchlist pages is buried in a mass of Teahouse and talk entries. Bluenose Gunner (talk) 01:04, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Bluenose Gunner! Is the box for "Expand watchlist to show all changes, not just the most recent" checked in advanced options under the Watchlist tab in your Preferences? Happy editing, Perfect4th (talk) 01:59, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your suggestion. No. Ot is not. Any suggestions? Bluenose Gunner (talk) 03:26, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Are you on the mobile site, or desktop? When I go to the mobile version, my watchlist shows every edit as its own entry. GreenLipstickLesbian (talk) 03:55, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Good morning.
Thank you for your comment. I am on a mobile device.
Previously, when I was in the watchlist Page tab I saw simply the changes made to pages on my watchlist. I had to go to another tab to see Teahouse and Talk comments.
Now, everything shows up regardless of which tab I am in. Bluenose Gunner (talk) 12:42, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, the https://en.m.wikipedia.org watchlist does that for me too for all pages/talk/other sections. No idea how long it's been going on. If you switch the desktop view (there's a button on the bottom of the page) is that a workable fix for you? GreenLipstickLesbian (talk) 20:53, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to suggest a new "page" or "article" for Wikipedia?[edit]

A distinguished physician from New York will turn age 100 in the next few weeks. Several persons who have known and worked with him over many decades have assembled a "page" or "article" of the length approximating what appears in Wikipedia for persons of similar professional status and importance. Where do we submit this for consideration by your editors? GHDeFriese (talk) 01:53, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, GHDeFriese. Your project presents significant problems regarding copyright. Wikipedia keeps an archive of every edit, including all edits to drafts and articles. Each editor agrees to freely license their copyrighted work with each edit they make. How can we know which specific person wrote each of the words, phrases and sentences in your draft? How do we know that all those people freely licensed their writing? Another issue is whether or not this physician is a Notable person. Being distinguished and 100 years old is not enough. Cullen328 (talk) 02:08, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think one could reasonably respond to the "How can we know which specific person ... ?" question above with "We can't, just as we can't for most edits to Wikipedia." Unusually, your user page tells us who you are---but the skeptically inclined could object that no, it describes a person in the real world, but this person may be a fiction. Entire featured articles can be, and sometimes are, constructed anonymously. (However there are indeed other problems with this proposal.) 126.254.171.63 (talk) 04:43, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Edits from IP addresses are attributed to those IP addresses. IP editors agree to the free licensing and terms of the attribution when they click "Publish". That is standard and commonplace. But a draft that has been written off-Wikipedia by several people who have not freely licensed their work presents problems. Cullen328 (talk) 05:53, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Aside from the issue of attribution, a compliation of personal anecdotes would not add up to an encyclopedia article. This sounds more like, letter to the editor type content that a local newspaper would be interested in. -- D'n'B-t -- 08:44, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, GHDeFriese, and welcome to the Teahouse. I'm afraid that D'n'B's point is the one that first occurs to me: Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources. Mayor Notability[edit]

Is mayor comes under the Wikipedia notability guidelines, if yes then why this (Janak Kotak) page deleted. If no, then why this page (Pushyamitra Bhargav) exist. IdeaCentre1 (talk) 07:14, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This was PRODDED on notability grounds, and no-one contested the PROD. Mayors are not presumed to be notable, so they need to pass WP:GNG or WP:NBASIC. Simply being a mayor is not sufficient. See WP:POLITICIAN: "Just being an elected local official, or ..., does not guarantee notability," Meters (talk) 08:48, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ultimately Wikipedia is biased. IC (talk) 11:15, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Meters: Please don't use jargon like "PRODDED" on The Teahouse, at least not without linking it (in this case to WP:PROD). Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:31, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Don't get hung up on the wording " Doesn't fall under Wikipedia: Notability guideline" in the deletion notice. This was just the wording used by the editor who originally placed the PROD notice on the article. I would interpret this as a concern that the subject of the article did not meet the notability requirements. You can ask for the article to be refunded if you wish to work on it. See Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion. Meters (talk) 08:59, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's how it works. Biased Wikipedia. IC (talk) 11:16, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ideacentre: Yes. Wikipedia is based against low-quality poorly-sourced content. You have been told how to have the article undeleted, and what needs to be done to bring it up the standard where (assuming the subject meets our neutrally-applied notability criteria) it can be kept on Wikipedia. The next move is up to you. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 11:31, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Trying to shorten yet provide access to a long list of publications & other material[edit]

I'm working on an article about a prolific author with a LOT of published books and articles, as well as awards, podcasts, recorded interviews, etc. I know it would be anathema to weigh down a Wiki article with such a long list, especially because not everything on the list will be cited in my article. But I want interested readers to be able to access them. So, my questions:

  1. Do I understand correctly that it's okay to provide a link to a complete list at an outside website? (which I'd divide into categories for ease of reading)
  2. If so, are there any restrictions on the type of website, since the link will lead outside Wikipedia? Like, for instance, could the outside website not be one run by a 3rd party (perhaps even the author's own website)?

(No, the article I'm working on is not in my sandbox.) Augnablik (talk) 12:16, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Two approaches: Include in article Robert Bly or have a Selected works in an article and a separate bibliography article Mark Twain bibliography. David notMD (talk) 12:44, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@David notMD: I'm intrigued by the second of the two approaches you're suggesting, creating a separate article within Wikipedia just for the author's published works and other materials. I never knew this sort of thing was an option. Is it very common in Wikipedia? But to be honest, I'm not sure I favor the idea because it would create what I'll call "Wiki clutter," for want of a better term.
Your first approach is one I wouldn't think Wikipedia would want, a pretty hefty list of publications only a few of which were cited in the article about the author.
What did you think about my question asking if I could create — in addition to a list of references I use within the article — a link to an outside website where the author's entire oeuvre could appear? (and would there be any restrictions on the type of website)? Augnablik (talk) 14:52, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you can: see WP:ELYES. But note that the site must be "neutral and accurate". Commercial sites (those that exist for the purpose of selling things) should not normally be linked. ColinFine (talk) 16:41, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Another example: Kurt Vonnegut and Kurt Vonnegut bibliography. The main article still has an extensive (complete?) list, the bibliography has a bit more information about each item. For an EXTREME example, Isaac Asimov lists much of his work and there are five (!!) bibliography articles. David notMD (talk) 17:49, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What is the Wikipedia policy on AI generated images?[edit]

I've found an article about a historical figure which features an AI generated image. The image isn't an upscaled version of a real image, but was generated based on descriptions of the historical figure. In what context are fully AI generated images allowed to be used on Wikipedia and should the aforementioned image be removed? Broadhead Arrow (talk) 13:56, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and welcome. I'm not entirely sure(so don't go by just me) but I think a pure AI generated image would be 1) original research and 2) would have copyright issues(as the uploader technically isn't the "creator"), so it should probably be removed. It would help to know what exactly we are talking about, though. 331dot (talk) 13:59, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rohitashva - Article with the AI generated image in question
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rastogi - The AI generated image from the first article shows up in this article as well
The description of the image states that it is an "image created using the context that describes the personality of the Harishchandra son, ROHITASHVA".
There's a Wikipedia project centered around removing poorly used AI generated content, and I'm pretty sure they'd remove the image in question, but I can't find any Wikipedia "rule" regarding images that were fully generated using AI. Only info I could find is about AI upscaled images, and this clearly isn't an AI upscaled image. Broadhead Arrow (talk) 14:14, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It wouldn't be the mere fact that it is an AI generated image that is the issue, but that the image is original research- in essence the opinion of the algorithm as to what the individual would look like.
Ive actually nominated File:1OhitRcopyright.jpg for deletion from Commons as it isn't a free image, because the uploader says they reserve all rights to it. 331dot (talk) 14:24, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There's a similar claim at File:KingHarishchandra.jpg which to be honest doesn't look hugely different from the image here albeit with a blue background. -- D'n'B-t -- 15:46, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Broadhead Arrow I don't think we have anything clearly written, see for example Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style/Images#WP:USERG_portraits. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:37, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Robert, and welcome to the Teahouse. Citing your own work in an article is regarded as editing with a conflict of interest, so you should not do so directly. I appreciate that what you are doing here isnot quite that, but saying that the article misrepresents your conclusion in a paper already cited; but I would suggest that for the sake of propriety and clarity, it is best to treat it as a COI.
Please submit an edit request so that an uninvolved editor can make the edit. (This would also have avoided the problem with you inadvertently breaking the WikiMarkup, and the problem of another editor misevaluating your change as original research). ColinFine (talk) 16:51, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Does anyone know of a script that will remove table formatting and convert it to a simple list? I've been contacted via the mentorship module about this article, and, well, it's immediately obvious why my mentee is experiencing difficulty.

If there isn't one, which I suspect is the case, if anyone here has the time and inclination to reformat this article, that would be a worthy endeavour. Aneta Corsaut Pic Update[edit]

I’m not tech savvy but I am a fan of The Andy Griffith Show. Can someone please update the main picture of Aneta Corsaut on her page? The current picture of her is TERRIBLE and not from The Andy Griffith Show, but from its short-run spinoff, Mayberry RFD. She does not look like herself AT ALL in that picture or like her character Helen Crump from The Andy Griffith Show. It’s almost like someone purposely picked the worst picture of her ever. I’m hoping someone can make it right and pick a picture where she actually looks like her normal self from The Andy Griffith Show. The picture on Rotten Tomatoes is great and she actually looks like herself and her most well-known character, Helen Crump. TIA

Aneta Corsaut Page KatAmalia (talk) 20:21, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, KatAmalia. The problem, as usual with images, is finding one whose copyright status is acceptable. That one, File:Aneta Corsaut Mayberry RFD 1969 (cropped).jpg, says it is public domain because it was published in the US without a copyright notice before 1977. But in most places, and in the US since 1977, copyright is automatic, so images have to be explicitly released (either to the public domain or under a licence such as WP:CC-BY-SA in order to be uploaded to Commons.
Having said that, Wikipedia does allow non-free images as long as their use complies with all the criteria in WP:NFCC.
However, no 1 of those criteria is Non-free content is used only where no free equivalent is available, or could be created, that would serve the same encyclopedic purpose. Since the current image is free (public domain) in order to use any non-free image in that article, you would have to argue that this image does not serve the same encyclopaedic purpose as the one you wanted to use - and I think you would find this hard.
So, in order to replace the image, somebody would need to
  1. Either find a free image of her, and upload it to Commons, or
  2. Find a non-free image, and upload it to Wikipedia, justifying this by arguing successfully that it served an encyclopaedic purpose that the current image does not. (And all the other non-free criteria as well).
I think it is unlikely that anybody else is going to be willing to do this - you're the one that wants it. I also think it's unlikely to be successful - but I could be wrong. Perhaps there's another pre-1977 picture which did not claim copyright that can be used, or even an image that for some reason the copyright holder released (perhaps a fan snapped her at some event and has put the picture up on flickr under a suitable licence).
But I think you are going to have to do the leg-work of looking for a suitable picture. ColinFine (talk) 20:49, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
